Obou Gbais
Ivorian artist Obou Gbais paints vibrant works of art which challenge the human condition and his Ivorian identity, incorporating an abundance of traditional mask drawings for Papes #2, each hold their own character.
Gbais studied at the National School of Fine Arts in Abidjan and now lives and works between Abidjan and Berlin. His work draws on his personal experiences of the military and political crises in Côte d'Ivoire, using distorted and expressive faces, often referred to as grimasques, to reflect impacts of trauma, violence, and social resistance.
